Professional wrestling is known for its spectacle, and the French promotion Catch As Catch Can (CACC) recently added to that legacy. The company held its Sur L’Éau event on a floating ring positioned on the Canal de Saint-Quentin in Proville, France.

The entire show, including a full battle royal, took place on the aquatic platform. One of the participants, MBM, captured the spirit of the event by posting a clip online with the fun caption "PLOUF MANIA," a nod to the French word for "splash."

While a floating ring is a rare sight, CACC isn't the first company to trade the canvas for the waves. History shows a few daring promotions have experimented with water-based matches.

As early as 1952, the iconic Gorgeous George grappled with Masked Marvel on a float at Seattle’s Aqua Theater. Japan's infamous FMW (Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling) promotion also held a battle royal where being eliminated meant taking a swim back to land.

Many fans will also remember WCW's Spring Break editions of WCW Nitro. These poolside shows created many memorable moments, none more famous than Kevin Nash powerbombing The Giant and then casually diving into the pool.

Events like Sur L’Éau continue a fun tradition of taking wrestling out of the arena and into unexpected environments, creating a unique viewing experience.

11 Most Shocking + Violent Moments in AEW History

"I am unapologetic about my love of... whatever you want to call it... the deathmatch style, hardcore. I love that stuff," Jon Moxley famously told Chris Van Vliet. "I understand most people are gonna think that's crap and they're not gonna want to watch that. Although I make no apologies that I like that stuff, I would never foist it upon everybody else. It's not like I walked into AEW and was like 'Look, all my matches are going to be crazy.' I never imagined we'd be able to do stuff like that."

Since its official formation in 2019, AEW has become wrestling's premiere destination for extreme acts of violence. With an entire locker room influenced by Atsushi Onita's FMW and Paul Heyman's ECW, both the men and women of AEW have created gruesome and iconic moments that rival any era of pro wrestling.

Tables, ladders, chairs, garbage cans and even kendo sticks have become commonplace in hardcore matches. But a bat full of a nails? A hypodermic needle? A champagne bucket filled with broken glass? These instruments of pain remain sickening to the core.
