CM Punk might be wrestling’s resident rebel, but when it comes to his taste in music, he's more emotional indie than punk rock these days.

During his recent appearance on the show Celtic Workouts, Punk opened up about the kind of music he's been vibing with lately, referring to his favorite genre as simply “sad bastard songs.”

CM Punk’s Go-To: "Sad Bastard" Music

Punk didn't hold back when describing his musical preferences:

"I’m into sad bastard songs, basically. Like Elliott Smith, you know, Phoebe Bridgers, sad, acoustic guitar music—that’s kinda my wheelhouse."

He also dropped the name of one artist he’s especially into lately:

"Chappell Roan is a big one. She is tremendous, and I think more people should check her out. She’s on heavy rotation for me right now."

Who Exactly is Chappell Roan?

For anyone unfamiliar, Chappell Roan has quietly become a standout indie-pop songwriter known for emotional storytelling and vulnerable lyrics. Tracks like “Pink Pony Club” and “Casual” have earned her a dedicated following—one that apparently includes CM Punk himself.

Punk’s Eclectic Music History

Punk’s affinity for diverse artists is nothing new. From famously walking out to Living Colour’s "Cult of Personality," to deep cuts from bands like Rancid and AFI, his playlists have always been interesting. But embracing newer indie artists like Chappell Roan shows that Punk’s musical evolution is still going strong.
